RootsWeb Agreement for
Free Geographical Web Space Accounts on RootsWeb
Please remember that your use of RootsWeb's resources implicitly signifies agreement with RootsWeb's Acceptable Use Policy. Please read our usage policy at:

Anyone hosting a site within the USGenWeb Project or the WorldGenWeb Project or similar geographical type project may request free web space from RootsWeb. The Agreement for Genealogical/Historical Societies can be found here.
RootsWeb regrets that we cannot provide free space to Family Associations, groups that focus on a single surname or any group of people wholly linked by blood or marriage. Family Associations may use FreePages accounts.
There are only a few rules that apply to free space at RootsWeb:
- Upload no copyrighted material, except with permission.
- Upload no GEDCOMs or other pedigree-related material. (RootsWeb provides the WorldConnect Project for those type materials.
- Upload no commercial material. The "no commercial material" rule is flexible, especially in the case of genealogical materials. You may go ahead and sell memberships, books, and research services within the guidelines of the affiliated project.
- Focus of the material should be primarily genealogical or historical. (No one will gripe if you slip a picture of your beloved cat Fluffy into an otherwise genealogical site, just don't get carried away.)
- Please don't use your RootsWeb space as a "dump" for material that won't fit on your main site elsewhere. Such practices can create a serious support problem for RootsWeb -- it is difficult to know if the site is still active, people accessing the site with an incomplete URL don't know where to start, etc. If you must split your site between RootsWeb and another server elsewhere, please maintain a main page on RootsWeb, preferably an index.htm or index.html, that provides access to the material hosted in the RootsWeb account, and links to your main page elsewhere. In addition, do not use RootsWeb space for a redirect page.
- Please don't request an account if your only purpose is to use RootsWeb provided toys such as mailmerge, while maintaining your website elsewhere. Ask your server elsewhere to install mailmerge (or whatever) instead. The "toys" are provided for RootsWeb webmasters only.
- If you request space to participate in a project such as USGenWeb, and later part company with the project, but want to continue to maintain a website devoted to the country or region in questions, that's OK, but only if you strip off the logos of the original project. (It helps us better identify which sites have been abandoned, and which are merely pursuing a new path.) The only exception to this rule is when the account name contains letters that identify that account as bing part of a particular project, ie. "usgw", "wgw", "genweb", etc.
- Affiliate links (those commercial links that pay you for the folks that click on them) may not be included on your site. You may only link to official MyFamily/Ancestry affiliates only with written permission from the TGN affiliate program.
- An acknowledgement that RootsWeb is hosting your site would be appreciated.
- Please notify RootsWeb at accounts@rootsweb.com of any changes in account ownership, email address, or project affiliation.

IMPORTANT: After you have your site up and operational, please send the URL of your homepage to websites@rootsweb.com. The Websites Webmaster will add you to the "Websites at RootsWeb Directory" which should help increase the amount of traffic your page receives.
RootsWeb's Pledge to Its Users - RootsWeb will neither sell nor charge for access to your genealogical information (for example, your posts to RootsWeb mailing lists or message boards, your Web pages hosted at RootsWeb, and any datasets you have donated to the USGenWeb Archives) without your permission.
